Twinset Coaching

Today I’ve been back at Vobster Quay diving centre running a twinset coaching course.

The aim of the course is to introduce an existing twinset diver to the skills and drills of shutdowns and isolation.

It’s something that I find a lot when a diver wants to develop their diving, carry more gas and stay underwater longer… they buy a manifolded twinset and then in essence dive it as though it’s one large cylinder. This in theory is fine until they have a problem and don’t know how to deal with it.

The skills and drills for isolation and shutdown are not big scary issues, and using the correct technique are not difficult either. Some people can pick them up easier than others, but that’s like all skills in life.

Our first dive today was alien to the student as their hands, muscles and head had no idea how to coordinate to do the skills. With perseverance and fierce determination from them, by the end of the day they had successfully managed to isolate and shutdown the twinset whilst remaining buoyant. With ongoing practice, muscle memory training and development, these new skills will become slicker and automatic.

Interestingly, I’ve also previously had people attend this workshop and don’t go away and practice the skills… what happens then is that they struggle to progress as ultimately these fundamental skills are the building blocks to profession in technical diving.

If you’re interested in developing your diving skills, please get in touch with me or check out my courses.

Stay safe and see you soon.

I am a passionate adventurer, loving being in the mountains walking, climbing, scrambling as much as I love being under the water exploring shipwrecks, mines and caverns, or in search of treasure in the depths. My real passion lies in combining mountains and water and as such you’ll often find me either in the mountains altitude diving, or in the mountains ice diving. Both exhilarating and peaceful – allowing me to regenerate the inner me, whilst pushing myself physically and mentally.
