Talybont-on-Usk to Pencelli Trek

A lovely family walk, in beautiful surroundings with babbling brooks and lovely flora and fauna is just on the edge of one of Wales national parks – The Brecon Beacons.

This is a gentle stroll through the heart of the beacons. There is a quaint village called Talybont-on-Usk (satnav LD3 7YJ). Opposite the cafe and postoffice, up a side lane is an intricate looking swing bridge. If you follow the tow path rightwards so that the canal stays on your left and follow this lovely path. The kids can cycle their new bikes along the path and the dog can run free initially. This quickly leaves the village and the road behind as it weaves an easy line through sheep pastures.

After a short distance, the path bends leftwards and the road and canal run parallel again allowing phenomenal views over the surrounding mountains and some fascinating ancient bridges prove to be ample distraction as you continue easily towards Pencelli. As you walk under bridges and through small tunnels look out for the colorful and magical Kingfishers nesting in the crevices. Also look out for the ‘old mans beard’ hanging in the ancient woodland along with the squirrels and wood pigeons.

As it nears the village of Pencelli, the canal turns sharp left, where it becomes two sides of the original Pencelli castle moat. This is a great place to have a wander around and enjoy. You can then rejoin the canal towpath where it then continues behind the main street, where there are usually a few boats moored. Leave the towpath by the road bridge or if you’re stopping for refreshment, by the garden of the Royal Oak. The bus can be caught from outside the front of the pub back to Talybont-on-Usk.
